General Questions

What is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation is the process of determining the geographic location of an IP address. It provides information such as country, city, ISP, timezone, and approximate coordinates of where an IP address is registered or located. This technology is widely used for content localization, security, analytics, and fraud prevention.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation accuracy varies by location and data source. Country-level accuracy is typically 95-99%, while city-level accuracy ranges from 70-90% for most locations. Accuracy is generally higher in developed countries and urban areas. The location shown is usually the ISP's service area, not an exact physical address.

Is IP tracking legal?

Yes, IP geolocation is legal and widely used for legitimate purposes including security, analytics, content localization, and fraud prevention. IP addresses are considered public information when accessing web services. However, it's important to use this information responsibly and in compliance with privacy laws.

Can I track someone's exact location with their IP address?

No, IP addresses cannot reveal exact physical locations or personal information. IP geolocation provides approximate location at city level at best, typically showing the ISP's service area rather than a specific address. Personal details like names, phone numbers, or street addresses cannot be obtained from an IP address alone.

IP lookups are free and unlimited — they show each IP's country and region. To unlock full detail on every lookup (exact city, ISP, coordinates and map) plus an ad-free site, get IPTracker Pro for $7 (one-time, 30 days). Developers who need programmatic API access can purchase API credits from $19 for 10,000 queries, or an unlimited plan at $87/month.

What are the API pricing options?

Our API pricing: 10,000 queries for $19, 50,000 for $27, 150,000 for $42, 300,000 for $57, or unlimited monthly access for $87/month. All plans include instant API key delivery and full access to all geolocation data. Credits never expire.

How does the IP Tracker Online API work?

Our API provides programmatic access to IP geolocation data. Simply send an HTTP request to our API endpoint with an IP address and your API key. You'll receive detailed JSON or XML formatted location data including country, city, ISP, coordinates, and timezone information. Full documentation is available in our API guide.

What format does the API return data in?

Our API supports both JSON and XML response formats. JSON is available at json.php and XML at xml.php. Simply append your IP address and API key as parameters. The response includes all geolocation fields in a structured format ready for integration into your application.

Tools & Features

What is the IP Logger tool?

Our IP Logger tool creates trackable links (and invisible tracking pixels) that capture information about visitors who open them. Free trackers show you that a click happened plus each visitor's country and browser. To unlock the exact IP address, city, ISP and map location — along with unlimited links, instant email alerts and 1-year retention — upgrade to the IPTracker Pro Pass ($7 one-time for 30 days). It's designed for cybersecurity professionals, investigators, and security researchers.

What is WHOIS lookup used for?

WHOIS lookup reveals domain ownership information including registrant details, registration dates, expiration dates, nameservers, and registrar information. It's commonly used for domain research, investigating websites, checking domain availability, and verifying domain ownership. Try our WHOIS lookup tool.

How do I analyze email headers to find the sender's IP?

Our Email Header Analysis tool extracts the originating IP from email headers. Simply paste the full email header into our tool, and we'll identify the sender's IP address, trace the email path, and provide geolocation data for each server in the routing chain.

What DNS record types can I look up?

Our DNS Record Locator supports all major record types: A (IPv4), AAAA (IPv6), CNAME, MX (mail), NS (nameserver), TXT, SOA, and PTR (reverse DNS). You can query using multiple DNS servers including Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS.

Can I look up multiple IP addresses at once?

IPTrackerOnline is optimized for individual IP lookups and tracking. For batch processing, our sister service InfoSniper.net offers a dedicated bulk IP upload tool that can process hundreds of IP addresses at once, returning geolocation data for each. It's ideal for log analysis, security auditing, and large-scale investigations.

Is there an interactive IP location map tool?

For visualizing IP addresses on an interactive world map, InfoSniper.net provides an advanced IP location map that plots addresses with detailed geographic data and satellite imagery. It's especially useful for visualizing network traffic origins and investigating IP address locations geographically.

IP Logger Guide

i
Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to use our IP Logger tool for cybersecurity investigations, threat analysis, and network diagnostics.

1

Create Your Logger

Visit the IP Logger Tool and choose a tracker type. For a link tracker, enter a destination URL where visitors will be redirected; for an invisible pixel tracker (great for email-open tracking), just give it a name — no URL needed. Click "Create" and you'll receive your trackable link or pixel embed code plus a results link for viewing analytics. Free accounts can create 1 tracker per day; the Pro Pass removes that limit.

2

Share Your Link

Share your logger link via email, social media, or any platform. When clicked, the visitor is seamlessly redirected to your destination URL while their information is logged.

3

View Analytics

Access your results link to view analytics. Free accounts see how many people clicked plus each visitor's country and browser. With the IPTracker Pro Pass, the results unlock fully — exact IP addresses, city, ISP, browsers, timestamps, and an interactive map pinpointing each visitor's location. Free data is kept for 5 days; Pro keeps it for a full year.

What data does IP Logger capture?

Every tracker captures the full visitor record: IP address, country/city/region, ISP and organization, latitude/longitude coordinates, timezone, device type, operating system, browser information, referrer URL, and timestamp. On free accounts the results are shown locked — you see the country and browser, while the exact IP, city, ISP and map location stay hidden until you unlock them with the IPTracker Pro Pass ($7 for 30 days). Pro accounts (and links created with API credits) show everything, on an easy-to-read dashboard with an interactive map.

How much is IPTracker Pro and what does it unlock?

The IPTracker Pro Pass is a one-time $7 charge for 30 days — no subscription, nothing to cancel. It unlocks the exact IP address, city, ISP and map location of everyone who clicks, plus unlimited tracking links, instant email alerts on every click, custom branded links, and 1-year data retention. After payment you get a Pro access code to paste into the "Pro access code or API key" box on the IP Logger page.

Is using an IP Logger legal?

IP logging is legal when used for legitimate purposes such as security investigations, threat analysis, research, and network diagnostics. Our tool is designed for cybersecurity professionals and investigators. Users must comply with applicable laws and use the tool responsibly.

Technical Details

What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (like 192.168.1.1) providing about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) providing 340 undecillion addresses. IPv6 was created to solve IPv4 address exhaustion. Our tools support both formats.

Why do I see "private" or "reserved" for some IP addresses?

Private IP addresses (like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16-31.x.x) are used within local networks and cannot be geolocated as they're not routable on the public internet. Reserved addresses are set aside for special purposes. Only public IP addresses can be geographically located.

How often is your geolocation database updated?

Our geolocation database is updated twice monthly to maintain accuracy, using a commercial-grade primary data source with industry-leading coverage. Critical updates are applied as needed to ensure accurate IP location information.

Why does my IP address show a different city?

IP addresses often show the location of your ISP's servers or regional hub rather than your exact location. This is normal. Additionally, VPNs, proxies, or mobile networks can cause your IP to show a different location.
